Rise & Resist
 A Community Program for Asian American Youth

If you’re a middle or high school student who has ever felt targeted by bias, stereotypes, or “jokes” that don’t feel so funny, we invite you to sign up for the Rise & Resist workshop. If you’re a parent, we encourage you to share this opportunity with your child and help them register.

This interactive workshop will be led by trainers from AAPI New Jersey and co-hosted by the Livingston Chinese Association, and is designed specifically for Asian American middle and high school students. During the workshop:

  • Middle school and high school students will split into two separate groups so discussions and activities can be tailored to their age and experiences;

  • In a safe and supportive space, students will:

    • Learn what microaggressions are and how they can show up in everyday comments and behavior, and why they can be harmful;

    • Be introduced to the RISE framework—Recognize, Interrupt, Speak, Empower—and practice using these steps in real-life scenarios in ways that are calm, clear, respectful, and protective of themselves;

    • Explore identity, empathy, and concrete strategies through real examples and small-group activities, so they can better take care of their own feelings and show up for their peers.

We hope students will go back to school with new understanding, practical tools they can actually use, and more courage in their hearts—along with a stronger sense of connection and support with their peers, so they know they don’t have to face these moments alone.

📅 Date & Time: Saturday, December 6, 3:30 PM-6:00PM
📍 Location: Livingston Senior/Community Center
  204 Hillside Avenue, Livingston
🎯 Who: Asian American middle & high school students (students will work in two separate groups)
🍕 At the end, both groups will come together for a pizza party, with pizza, drinks, and snacks provided.

Rise & Resist

    • 了解什么是“微歧视”(microaggressions),以及它在日常言行中为什么会带来伤害;

    • 接触并练习 RISE 四个步骤(Recognize 识别、Interrupt 打断、Speak 表达、Empower 赋能),通过情景练习,尝试用冷静、清晰、又尊重他人的方式来回应不合适的言行,同时保护好自己;

    • 结合真实案例和小组讨论,思考自我认同和共情能力,练习在困难的时刻既照顾好自己的感受,也学会支持身边的同学。

Livingston Senior/Community Center

204 Hillside Avenue, Livingston
