Recognize(识别)Interrupt(打断)Speak(表达)Empower(赋能)

Rise & Resist – Asian American Youth Workshop Successfully Held in Livingston

On Saturday, December 6, more than twenty Asian American middle and high school students attended the Rise & Resist workshop at the Livingston Senior/Community Center, hosted by the Livingston Chinese Association and led by trainers from AAPI New Jersey.

The workshop, conducted as one combined group, was lively, engaging, and highly relatable. Trainer Shaira opened with an interactive game that energized the room and helped students connect. Using real-life examples, she explained how bias, stereotypes, and microaggressions appear in everyday life and why they can be harmful. Students remained focused and actively participated throughout the session.

A highlight of the workshop was the introduction of the RISE framework—Recognize, Interrupt, Speak, Empower—which gave students practical tools to respond to insensitive or discriminatory moments in clear, respectful, and confident ways.

Afterward, students continued their conversations during a pizza party, building new connections and sharing what they learned.

Parents also offered positive feedback. Artist Wei Biao Yan shared:
“My older daughter said the workshop was excellent. It brought middle and high school students together and taught them how to stand against discrimination. This shows how successful the event was—great job!”

The Livingston Chinese Association is proud to support programs that empower Asian American youth with knowledge, confidence, and community.
